Hey there! If you're reading this, chances are you're in the middle of planning a wedding and probably feeling a bit overwhelmed by all the details. As a wedding photographer, I get it. The day can fly by and while you want to make sure the photos are stunning, you also want to enjoy yourselves without feeling like you're constantly posing or worrying about the next shot.
So I thought I'd share some tips to help make your wedding day photos stress-free and above all - fun! With a little prep and trust in your photographer, your photos will capture the best moments without adding any extra stress to an already busy day.
1. Choose a Photographer You Trust (and Vibe With)
It’s not just about the pictures, it's about the experience too. You’re going to spend a lot of time with your photographer on your big day so it’s important that you feel comfortable with them. Do they listen to your vision (I will)? Are they easy to talk to (I am)? When you trust your photographer, it’ll take some of the pressure off.
You chose your photographer because you love their work, so trust them to do their thing. I know it can be nerve-wracking to hand over the reins, but I promise I’ve got your back. I always make it a point to guide my couples through the process, suggesting poses, locations, and helping with little details like fixing stray hairs or a wrinkled dress. The less you have to worry about, the better your photos will be.
2. Do a Pre-Wedding Shoot
If you’re nervous about being in front of the camera, an engagement shoot is a great way to break the ice. We’ll get to know each other better, figure out your best angles, and see how we work together before the big day. Plus you’ll get some gorgeous photos for your save-the-dates!
3. Set a Realistic Timeline
One of the main causes of stress on the wedding day is running behind schedule, especially for photos. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had couples scrambling to fit in portraits because everything else ran late. To keep things flowing smoothly, build extra time into your timeline for portraits and family pictures. It’s better to have a little cushion than to feel rushed. If possible, plan for a first look before the ceremony so it gives you both time to calm your nerves and get some beautiful, intimate shots without the pressure of a ticking clock.
4. Get Your Bridal Party On Board
Your bridal party is there to support you, so help them help you out! Give them a heads-up about the photo schedule ahead of time so they know what to expect. When they’re in the know, they’ll be more relaxed and easier to wrangle for group shots. I’m a great wrangler, so happy to help with this!
5. Let Your Photographer Lead (Within Reason)
You hired your photographer for a reason - I know what I’m doing! Don’t be afraid to let me take the lead when it comes to positioning or setting up the shot. Of course, communicate if you have any specific ideas or requests, but don’t worry for one second if you’re at a total loss. It’s easier on you if you don’t feel like you’re constantly managing the photos - it lets you focus on what really matters: enjoying your day!
6. Stay Flexible
Things rarely go exactly as planned. The officiant might be late, the bouquet might not survive the whole day, and someone might accidentally step on your train. It’s okay! The best advice I can give is to roll with it. Some of the best wedding photos come from those unexpected “imperfections.” The more relaxed you are, the better your photos will turn out. Remember: you’re marrying the love of your life and that’s the most important thing!
In the end, the key to stress-free wedding photos is being prepared, staying flexible, and trusting the people you’ve hired to help capture your day. I will help you ensure that your focus is on the love and joy that surrounds you, and your photos will reflect that magic.
Happy planning, and here’s to making memories you’ll actually want to relive for the rest of your life!
